During a one week visit to China, from 11 - 14 November 2013, Indonesia's Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy, Mari Elka Pangestu, will meet the press and travel operators in Beijing, Jinan (Shandong province), Shanghai and Guangzhou (Guandong province), where she will publicize the recently signed MoU between China and Indonesia for increased tourism cooperation between the two countries.
In a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on 2 October in Jakarta that was witnessed by visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indonesian President Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono, it was agreed to further strengthen tourism cooperation between the two countries. The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy and the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA), were instructed to jointly achieve the target of 2 million tourists in two-way flow by the year 2015, with the purpose of strengthening people-to-people relations between the two nations.

The visit of the Minister to China is an immediate follow up of the MoU, where Minister Mari Pangestu also launches the Mandarin Language website edition of www.indonesia.travel. The Mandarin edition has the specific tagline Qi Huan Yinni, meaning, magical, mystical and fascinating Indonesia. This tagline is the Mandarin version of the English: "Wonderful Indonesia".
An action plan to support this cooperation has already been drawn up which includes: improved travel facilitations, step up communication and increased travel by Chinese Citizens to the Republic of Indonesia; develop and share tourism content, information and statistics between China and Indonesia, and hold more joint promotions on each other's marketing platforms including on each other's websites, as well as promote tourism investments.
There will also be more B to B exhibitions and increased dialogue between the two Ministries.
During the visit, Minister Mari Pangestu will also witness the Letter of Intent between China's major outbound travel operators in Shanghai, Jinan and Guangzhou, with Indonesia's Panorama Oriental, a bonafide inbound Indonesian travel operator. More such Letters of Intent will follow in subsequent stages. The agreement is to ensure consumers that in accordance with the new Tourism Law of China, visitors from China will have a good experience when travelling to and enjoying their holidays in Indonesia through this cooperation at the working level.
The Minister's visit to China will be followed immediately by a Roadshow undertaken by Industry Partners from November through December 2013, that include promotions in Shanghai from 16 - 17 November; Guangzhou 23-24 November and Shenzhen 30 November – 1 December.
In 2014, the Action Plan includes familiarization trips to Indonesia to destinations "Beyond Bali" for Media and Travel Agents from China, more campaigns on New Media platforms like Weibo, Wechat besides hosting key opinion leaders/bloggers. The year will culminate with a Roadshow to 6 cities in China between August to September 2014.
China visitors to Indonesia grows rapidly
Tourism from China to Indonesia has grown rapidly in the past years. In 2012 some 618,223 tourists from China visited Indonesia, a surge of 22.5% from 514,749 in 2011. While between January to August this year, the number of tourists from China has already risen with a significant 12%.
China has now become the fourth top tourist market for Indonesia, after Singapore and Malaysia. While, according to online booking through www.17u.com, the island of Bali is the third top choice destination among Chinese traveller bookings after Jeju and Phuket,
In 2013 Indonesia is confident to reach the total international arrival target of 8.6 million tourists, up from 8.04 million in 2012.
Meanwhile, air connections have also improved greatly. Garuda Indonesia flies daily from Guangzhou and Shanghai to Jakarta, now also daily from Beijing to Jakarta. While China Southern flies daily between Guangzhou and Jakarta.
